1985 by Bowling for Soup

  1985

I don’t know quite what it is about this song that I like most. The music is fun and has kind of a pop sound to it, but it still maintains a good rock edge to it as well. The lyrics are equally good. Funny and light they talk about a woman who “settled” for suburbia and now wants to relive her glory days of 1985.

They lament the loss of music on MTV among other things. They also throw in a little tribute to the great bands of yesteryear (some are still going strong) like U2, Motley Crue, etc. They even take a few shots at current poular trends like “reality” TV.

Here is a lyric sample so you can see what I mean.

She hates time make it stopwhen did Motley Crew become classic rock?

And when did Ozzy become an actor?

Please make this stop

Stop!

And bring back

Bruce Springstein, Madonnaway before Nirvana

there was U2 and Blondie

and music still on MTV

her two kids in high school

they tell her that she?s uncool

but she still preoccupied

with 1985

I guess I like the fact that they don’t take themselves to seriously and have fun remembering how things were and how they’ve changed. Not a great song, but a fun song to remember the glory days of rock. Since I grew up during this time it was like a little slice of nostalgia for me. What did happened to the music on MTV? Does anybody know?
