GMail in the Browser

Today I happened to be able to sneak through the blasted WebSense filter at work to check my GMail inbox. I am awaiting an order from Threadless.com so I thought that I would check on the status. The email from Threadless has a link to track the package, but it is linking to a now defunct page and so I get forwarded to the new page and have to copy and paste the tracking number.

Track PackagesThat’s when I saw this little link in the right sidebar. A simple click and my package was tracked. Very cool. Following the ‘About these links’ link informed me that GMail scans my emails and finds any package tracking numbers and offers links to track them. It also looks for addresses and offers to map them with Google Maps.

Once GMail started offering POP access I kind of stopped going to the website for most email. I like that the option is there for when I am traveling and such, but for everyday emailing, the POP access is fine. But, if they keep adding features like this I might have to start using the web interface more often.
