Of Curses and Baseball
http://digitalsandbox.us/wp-content/redsox.jpg” alt=“Red Sox” />Those who know me, know that I am a sports fan. I enjoy pretty much all types of sports. Not participating mind you, I am far to lazy for that, but watching. That said, I definitely enjoy some sports more than others.
Baseball is one of my lesser sports. I basically only watch if my team is playing. That my team did not do well this season will not be discussed. I haven’t even really watched any of the playoff games this year. I have been more or less aware of the goings on, but I have not sat down and watched a game this playoff season. That will all change tonight.
The Boston Red Sox, the whipping boys of the Bronx Bombers for over 84 years now, have done the unthinkable. They have gone from a 3-0 deficit, to a 3-3 tie in the ALCS and managed to force Game 7. This has never been done in baseball history. And they have done it in pretty dramatic fashion. Coming from behind in the 9th to win Game 4. A 14th inning run to win Game 5. And Curt Shilling pitching with an injured ankle for 7 innings in Game 6. This is a team that is refusing to give up hope of a shot at a World Series Championship!
As pretty much everyone is aware of, the Red Sox have not won a World Series since they traded Babe Ruth to the Yankees 84 years ago. Before the trade they won 5 World Series, more than any other club at the time (5 out of the 15 played). They have appeared in only 5 World Series since and have lost every one of them in Game 7. Meanwhile, the Yankees, who had never won a World Series before the trade, have won 26 World Series! This got a lot of people talking about a curse. The Curse of the Bambino.
The story of the rivalry between the two teams is a long and sordid history. It didn’t help that most of Boston’s best talent would leave Boston for the Yankees. It definitely didn’t help that everytime the Red Sox managed to pull it together, they would lose in some dramatic fashion. And so the story of the Curse grew, and many Sox fans believe it to be real.
Well, that could all change tonight. The Boston Red Sox may just be able to pull out a win and send themselves to the World Series by defeating the team that has kept them out for so long. Sure, technically, they need to win the World Series to remove the Curse. But beating the team that is responsible, in the eyes of many, for the Curse will go along way to getting that monkey off their back.
Really, I am not a Red Sox fan. I’m not even a much of a baseball fan. But tonight I will be watching. And if I had some red socks, I’d be wearing ‘em. Here’s hoping you win your first World Series Championship in 86 years. Go Sox!
