Spaceship One
Today is the day for Spaceship One. Today they will attempt to collect the $10 million X-Prize for being the first private spacecraft to enter space (about 62 miles in altitude) and land back on earth and repeat that within two weeks.
This is an historic day. To think that because of this group, spaceflight might become attainable to the average person in my lifetime is just amazing. Someday, 30 or 40 years from now, a person might be able to buy a ticket to outer space and experience that thrill. Maybe by then we will have colonized the Moon and you can go visit to play some low-G golf. Maybe not, but I have just added a new item to my list of “Things to do Before I Die.”
Update: The attempt is over. They will determine later by radar and other means of they were successful.
Another Update: They did it! Click the link in the first update to read the updated article from CNN.
